Is e-marketing a lazy form of business?

The way businesses are done in developing countries such as Nigeria is totally different from developed countries such as the US. Nigeria is a country where people go out of their homes to carry out their business for the day i.e the traditional way. Being new to an environment (US), has opened my eyes, I saw how lazy most Americans are, some quote it to "being creative" but in reality its laziness. Think about it, some people buy their groceries online. Its claimed that the transaction cost is reduced but in reality, the shipping cost is almost equivalent to going to the supermarket yourself. It also gives you the option of picking a different choice in a situation where your original product is not available.

Another reason why I think this business is a lazy form of doing business is because it requires little dedication to work. Most jobs are already computerized, for instance listening to a programmed voice when you call an office, wasting time instead of a person picking up and giving you a direct answer for your question. Also, I believe this has contributed to the "no more jobs in developed nations". When you have most of the work done by online software programmes. Instead of having marketers outside and getting customers, the job is left to google or some form of online advertising company to do the job. No wonder there are no more jobs in developed countries.

  1. Hey Damilola!
I agree with you in some aspects and I disagree with you in others. Firstly, I do agree that e-marketing creates some unemployment for marketers, including salespersons at general stores and marketing firms. With online marketing being so prominent and cheaper these days, businesses are getting rid of their 'physical' marketers to promote their products and build customer relationships. I also agree that for things like grocery shopping it would be better to go in person to proabably take advantage of free samples being offered etc. However, it depends on the sector or industry you are looking at. For example, in the tourism industry, it is much easier for e-marketers to do business because most, or nearly, all people go online to search for for vacation packages, flights and so forth.

You also emphasize that e-marketing is a lazy form of business but I do not believe this. I would say it is a more efficient form of business rather! With technology as it is today, people having internet access even from their cell phones, almost everyone all across the world with computers and accessibilty to the internet, e-marketing is vital and almost essential for businesses today. It is easier for both marketers and customers. For the customer everything is a click away! If they want to know about a product or service they simply quickly surf the net with ease and all the information is guaranteed to be right there. For the e-marketers it is easier to put your information out there andhave it readily accessible to anyone, rather than having to pay individuals to market the commodities.
So maybe when Nigeria gets a little more developed and their technologies improve they would take more advantage of these opportunities like e-marketing.
(Please do not take offense Dami! I am saying this all through friendship! Lol!)

  2. Although I respect your point of view, I do not agree with your statement that E-marketing is a lazy way of conducting business. On the contrary, it is innovation at its best. Without constant innovation there would be minimal progress and stagnant economic growth. Years ago, marketing was primarily done via door to door sales - completely inefficient given today's technology, but right for the time. With the advent & popularity of the television, marketing efforts shifted to T.V. ads. We all know how influential these are in impacting consumer behavior - just think of the HUGE price tag of the Super Bowl ads. In today's world, the general public spends an increasing amount of time surfing the Web and on social media sites. Marketing is about reaching the masses. If the masses are online - that is the vehicle that marketers need to target. Many companies have thrived due to the growth of their e-marketing efforts, which leads to the creation of jobs. Developing successful e-marketing campaigns is not a simple process. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication to develop a plan which will identify the target's market's online behavioral patterns.

  3. I can see why you would say that e-marketing is a "lazy" form of doing business. Yet it seems to work. As we have seen many consumers (myself included) prefer buying or getting information though the e -market. The general public is aware that e-market has been substituing jobs in the developed world , but the system is so innovative and efficient that it "seems" to be a fair tradeoff.
